Resources at the University of Akron
I am very proud to be a student in the collaborative Adult Development and Aging Psychology PhD Program at the University of Akron and Cleveland State University; click the link to find out more information. The best part of being in this program are the close and meaningful relationships I have developed with our ADA faculty. My biggest inspiration as a teacher, researcher, and overall person is my advisor, Dr. Toni Bisconti. Check out her program of research on the Transitions Resilience and Identity-Lab website. I also would recommend checking out the Emotions and Aging Lab headed by Dr. Jennifer Tehan Stanley. I recently have collaborated with Dr. Stanley and her students on a project related to the reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic. Perhaps the best part of being a student at UA is having the Center for the History of Psychology right on campus. The museum is a must-see for those passionate about psychology!
Professional Affiliations
I am a student affiliate of American Psychological Association (APA) which has offered me many opportunities for professional development. Specifically, I belong to APA Division 44 (Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity) and Division 20 (Adult Development and Aging). I am also a student member of the Gerontology Society of America and the Association for Psychological Science (APS), and have presented at the national conferences for both organizations. Lastly, I am a member of Psi Chi and have served as president and vice president in Akron’s chapter, which has also supported me in my development as a researcher and student.
Teaching Resources
Throughout the several courses I have taught, I have found the following sources very helpful. Division 2 (Society for Teaching of Psychology) of the APA offers lots of free resources available to psychology instructors. Additionally, APS also has great teaching resources dealing with teaching statistics and research methods. Since much of my research is on prejudice, I have also found that the resources provided by the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues have been especially helpful in promoting social justice in my teaching.
Other Interesting Resources
Also check out local organizations that either provide services to sexual minorities or have previously assisted in recruitment in my masters thesis, such as Akron Pride, Community AIDS Network/ Akron Pride Initiative, Gay Community Endowment Fund, and Rainbow Elder Care of Greater Dayton. Additionally, for those interested in addressing ageism, check out the Ageism First Aid course provided by the Gerontology Society of America.
